At last things are underway as far as filming is concerned, for the 2015 production of Poldark. BBC One tweeted a picture yesterday with the caption ” Filming is now underway on #Poldark. Aidan Turner as Ross and Eleanor Tomlinson as Demelza. ”
With the news that the location schedule is taking the crew to the Cotswolds in the early part of May ( 4th – 8th in Corsham High Street, Wiltshire ), it seemed highly likely that the filming crew would base themselves in the Cotswolds initially as well. And so it appears they have.. Location – filming is a complicated and expensive business, one that requires much logistical and financial planning to maximise time and resources etc. For now, filming is taking place in & around Corsham – and includes the village of Sherston, about ten miles north of Corsham town.
Any one who knows the Cotswolds will understand the attraction for TV & film companies looking for period locations and properties. The area abounds with them. Nestling amongst quiet country lanes and picturesque towns and villages are many unspoilt houses and vistas, perfect for reproducing the ambience and historical feel for costume dramas. The BBC’s Father Brown is shot entirely on location there and countless other film & TV shows have used locations in the Cotswolds counties of Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire & the edge of Oxfordshire.
We mentioned in our recent blog post on Corsham, the venue of Corsham Court as a place of interest. Other worthwhile visits in that area include Westonbirt National Arboretum, Hazelbury Manor, Sheldon Manor and the unusually- named Nan Tow’s Tump ( one of the Cotswold’s largest round barrows , supposedly originating from the remains of a witch who was buried alive in her house ! ).
